Tips how to buy play bicycles

Basics

A low step-through guarantees easy and safe ascend and descend which is very important for the early learning phase. A child orientated frame geometry guarantees a safe, comfortable and healthy sitting position. PUKY safety set (crash pad, safety handlebar grips, mudguard edge-protection) prevents children from injuries. Braking system suitable for children's hands especially made for early learners. A robust frame with powder coating and high value components guarantee a long servicable life. Long lasting spare parts service. High resale value. TUEV and GS tested safety.

Bicycle size:

The body height, weight and less muscular strength of children compared to adults require not to overstrain children with oversized bicycles.

Especially learner versions must allow the child to safely stand on the ground with both feet (not only on tiptoes) in order to ensure maximum stability.

Children have a smaller visual field as adults, i. e. they experience their environment with a shortened viewing angle. This shortage bears risks, especially in areas close to road traffic. Thus, it is important that children can drive their bikes in an upright position. A relaxed and upright position only allows children an optimum experience of their environment while driving their bikes and are the basis for safe driving behaviour. PUKY guarantees a reasonable service life by offering a useful adjustable range for all periods of growth. The solid and high value PUKY quality vehicles can be used by many generations of children and have a high resale value.

Regarding child orientated frame size:

A very important criterion when buying a children's bicycle is the child orientated frame geometry. As children - unlike adults - have their centre of gravity in the upper body it is very important that the children's bike show a stable drivability. The child orientated position of the bottom bracket as well as the optimum distance between saddle and handlebar are further factors for a child orientated frame geometry. A PUKY bicycle is not a zoomed adults' bike, it corresponds to the specific anatomy of a child.

Regarding age orientated braking system:

All PUKY play bicycles are equipped with a back pedal hub brake. In addition to that they have a caliper brake and a handbrake in order to playfully learn how to use a handbrake. It is not allowed that the handbrake retardation of a play bicycle corresponds to the one of an adults' bike due to the danger of a blockade during an emergency braking. Most children are not accustomed to the proper use of a brake and often (especially in traumatic moments) they are not able to dose the brake power correctly. Thus, PUKY offers a very child orientated cantilever brake.

Regarding supporting wheels:

Riding a bike starts with balance control that can be trained more intensively without supporting wheels (stabilizers). Thus, supporting wheels should only be used (if necessary) for a very short period and should be removed as soon as possible. Regularly riding a bike with stabilizers leads to an unhealthy sitting position as they use to "support themselves" on the stabilizers. For training purposes without supporting wheels we recommend the bicycle training aid.
